If you’re going to be traveling north or south on I-135 this weekend and need to pass the Highway 96 interchange, get ready for a messy detour. In fact, anyone driving near that area should pack their patience.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will close northbound I-135 in Wichita from 6 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, until late afternoon Sunday, Oct. 26, as part of the ongoing Junction Gold Project, Phase 2B.

The closure is necessary so crews can remove formwork and overhang brackets from the newly poured flyover bridge.

In addition to northbound I-135, the following ramps will also be closed:

  • The southbound I-135 ramp to eastbound K-96
  • The westbound K-96 exit ramp to North Hydraulic Avenue

Detour details:

  • Northbound I-135 traffic will be rerouted to westbound K-96, then to the Hillside Avenue exit. From Hillside, drivers can use the eastbound K-96 on-ramp to rejoin northbound I-135.

Southbound drivers who need to access eastbound K-96 should exit at North Hydraulic Avenue, continue north on Hydraulic, then use the on-ramp to eastbound K-96.

Motorists should allow extra travel time and be prepared to follow posted detours or choose alternate routes.
