The MEFSEC, now known as the Lynette Woodard Center, gave rise to a number of great basketball players, many of whom went on to play in the WNBA and the NBA.   One of those was Lynette Woodard, who the center was renamed after in 1984.

Woodard was on hand late last month for the unveiling of new artwork honoring many of Wichita’s great players who polished their game at the MEFSEC.

With the center named after her, it was logical that Woodard’s mural is the largest,  but the list of those honored with murals of their likeness included Korleone Young, Maurice Evans, Adrian Griffin, Taj Gra and  Aubrey Sherrod.  Female ballers weren’t forgotten.  Murals were also included for Collen Bowser Edwards, LaToya Randle and Angela Buckner, who currently serves as the center director.

  1. MEFSEC was the place to be when it came to SKATING. Every teens was there on Fridays nite . NORTH was the skatring if you had a car it was very convenient for those who didn’t have transportation. Saturdays was girls basketball tournaments and guess who was on our team? Lynette Woodard she was so young in fact I was the oldest girl I was going to North High she was in Jr high our team was Blue Angel’s and we won all our games and I can remember getting mad because Lynette should have gotten the most valuable player instead another girl got it and she wasn’t that good. Our trophies was so small it was pitiful but we were No.1 in our league. I was short but I could jump so I was called rebounder Lynette she was the tallest on the team she worn her hair into 2 big braid. And could ball then. That’s when the real Converse Hightop tennis shoes was the thing I wore a pair of white our color was light blue jersey . Congrats to you Lynette Woodard .
