Young people between the ages of 14 and 17 will have a unique opportunity this summer to positively interact with law enforcement by attending one of three Youth Citizens Police Academy opportunities.

The weeklong program aims to promote community engagement and foster positive relationships between youth and  law enforcement officers.

The YCPA provides insight into the inner workings of the Wichita Police Department and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.

The goal of the academy is to inspire interest in law enforcement careers, discourage gang involvement and prevent youth from getting involved in the juvenile justice system.

The academy offers:

  • Hands-on learning about law enforcement procedures
  • Insightful discussions on community policing
  • Opportunities for teamwork and leadership development
  • Engagement with officers to build trust and understanding
  • A chance to make lasting connections with peers and mentors.

And that’s not all! Participants who complete the program will get a backpack filled with essential school supplies and two shirts featuring the unique YCPA logo.

Dates for the Academy are June 1-14, July 8-12 and July 29 to Aug. 2.

Sessions are from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. with early drop-off and late pick-up options available for parents’ convenience.

Lunch will be provided daily. Space is limited to 30 kids per session so interested kids and their parents should act quickly to secure a spot.

Sign-up can be completed by emailing wpdjiu@wichita.gov to let the YCPA leaders know the preferred session date and why you are interested in being part of YCPA.
