To begin Wyandotte County students’ school year confidently, the Jegna Klub partnered with local barbershops to host its first haircut social yesterday, providing free haircuts to 150 students.
Jegna Klub is gving free haircuts to the youth. Barbershops include Purple Label Barbershop, Surrcutts and Unlimited Trends.
The Jegna Klub, which reaches students through its Boys to Men and Sisterhood programs, teaches youth to build positive relationships, character traits, social skills, financial literacy and introduces them to a variety of potential future careers.
Barbers from Purple Label Barbershop, Surrcutts and Unlimited Trends participated in the nearly six-hour long event at The Jegna Klub’s new building on 18th Street where students received free haircuts, shoes, clothes and hygiene kits to start the new school year.
“To partner with (The Jegna Klub) was a great opportunity to be able to give back to the community and give back to the youth that in some cases are less fortunate than others,” said Djuan Bonds, owner of Purple Label Barbershop.
Moses Wyatt, founder of The Jegna Klub, said there is much more to come for the community through the organization, like a permanent shoe and clothing closet where students can pick up donated clothing.
“This is not just a one-time deal,” Wyatt said. “This is something we want the kids to benefit from throughout the year.”
Also, Wyatt said The Jegna Klub plans to expand to four more schools in January, with goals of reaching 300 to 400 students in Wyandotte County.
“To me, it’s real important that we be the change that we wish to see in our community — that’s why this is so important,” Wyatt said. “For the youth to see us come together and see us do something, it pushes them and tells them that their future is important to us.”
