Coming to Netflix on March 20 is the much-anticipated biopic for Madam C.J. Walker – “Self Made”; Octavia Spencer stars as Walker -America’s first female self-made millionaire. She made her living as a hair-care entrepreneur and against the odds, overcame post-slavery racial and gender biases, personal betrayals, and business rivalries to build a groundbreaking brand. Walker revolutionized Black hair care, as she simultaneously fought for social change.
The show is based on the book ‘On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker,’ written by Walker’s great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles. Surprisingly, this project marks the first time that this uplifting story about the cultural icon is brought to screen.
Late last year, the big screen welcomed the likes of Harriet Tubman – another Black icon of hope and determination.
A lot of great Black film calls Netflix home these days; “Dolemite Is My Name,” starring Eddie Murphy got great ratings from popular critic platforms like Rotten Tomatoes – receiving a 97%.
With a star-studded cast, this is sure to be a great watch. To name a few familiar faces, Blair Underwood will star as the businesswoman’s husband, C.J. Walker; Tiffany Haddish as her daughter Lelia; Carmen Ejogo as Walker’s business rival Addie Munroe; Garrett Morris as Walker’s father-in-law; Kevin Carroll as her longtime lawyer, Freeman Ransom; and Bill Bellamy as Ransom’s cousin Sweetness.
Self Made is produced by SpringHill Entertainment and Wonder Street in association with Warner Bros. Television. LeBron James and Octavia Spencer are among the executive producers.
