Trivia Answer: A. Joseph Jenkins Roberts. He was the first American and the first president of Liberia who served from 1848 to 1856 and later again from 1872 to 1876. Liberia elected an American as president because the country was founded by the American Colonization Society in 1822 as a settlement for freed African American slaves. The early settlers were primarily African Americans who had been born in the United States, so it was natural for them to elect one of their own as the first president. Roberts, who was born in Virginia, played a significant role in the colony’s development and was a prominent leader among the settlers.
