LeVota Orders Property Tax Credits, Escalating Jackson County Assessment Battle

Jackson County homeowners who paid higher property tax bills following disputed 2023 and 2024 assessments could begin receiving credits under an executive order signed by County Executive Phil LeVota.

Jackson County Executive Phil LeVota has signed an executive order creating property tax credits for homeowners affected by disputed 2023 and 2024 assessments. The move bypasses legislative inaction but sets up new legal and financial battles over who should bear the cost of returning millions of dollars already distributed to schools, cities and libraries.

Kansas Renters Can Now Clear Some Old Eviction Records

An eviction notice posted on a rental property. Beginning July 1, Kansas renters who meet certain requirements can ask a court to remove eligible eviction records from public view, potentially improving their ability to qualify for housing years after an eviction case.

A new Kansas law gives eligible renters a chance to remove old eviction records that may be keeping them from finding housing. The process is free, most people can complete it without an attorney, and the state has created an online Self-Help Center with the forms and instructions to get started.
