For 30 years, The Community Voice has shown up for you — through every election, every celebration, every crisis, and every moment that mattered to Black communities across Kansas and the Kansas City metro. We’ve done this work with a small team, enormous commitment, and a mission that has never changed: to inform, empower, and strengthen our communities.
Today, we need you to show up for us.
Here’s the truth:
Local journalism costs real money. And the revenue that once sustained Black newspapers no longer exists. This year, we lost a dedicated reporter when another outlet offered him twice what we were struggling to pay. We can’t blame him — but we cannot keep losing the talent our community deserves.
At the same time, our digital audience is growing fast — but maintaining and expanding digital platforms is expensive. Print costs continue to rise too. Yet we provide all of our journalism free to the public.
But free to take is not free to make.
Looking ahead to 2026, we must hire two essential newsroom positions:
- a full-time digital editor/producer – over our social, newsletters, website & video channel
- a full-time reporter
Together, with salary, benefits, and overhead, the cost is $150,000.
⭐️ For this end-of-year campaign, we’re asking our community to help us raise one-quarter of that amount — $37,500 — by December 31.
This will help carry our newsroom through the first quarter 2026 and give us the foundation we need to grow.
This is a goal we can reach together.
And here’s the part many people underestimate: small gifts move us forward.
If each reader contributed $20 or $50 today, we would surpass our goal.
If even a small number become $15/month sustaining donors, we would enter 2026 on solid ground.
