Kansas City families getting ready for the school year can save some money during the Missouri Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday the weekend of Aug. 5-7.
Shop at retail stories in Kansas City for eligible items such as personal computers and select computer equipment; any item normally used by students in a standard classroom; and clothing items.
“You do not need to be a Missouri resident or student to participate by purchasing qualified items from stores in Kansas City from Friday through Sunday,” City Manager Brian Platt said. “Kansas City, and all four counties where the City is located, will join with the state to provide this money-saving opportunity.”
There are limits to the tax exemption based on the cost of items:
Personal computers not to exceed $1,500
Computer peripheral devices not to exceed $1,500
Computer software with taxable value of $350 or less
Graphing calculators not to exceed $150
Clothing articles with a taxable value of $100 or less
School supplies not to exceed $50 per purchase
Excluded are items such as sporting equipment, jewelry, watches, portable or desktop telephones, handbags, copiers or other office equipment, and furniture
