Residents in a northeast Wichita neighborhood will have a one-day opportunity to get rid of unwanted household items, tires, tree debris and other trash for free during a neighborhood clean-up on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 8 a.m. to noon.
The clean-up, coordinated by Saint Mark United Methodist Church and Holy Savior Catholic Church with support from the City of Wichita, will serve residents living between 13th and 17th streets and Grove and Hillside. The event will be held rain or shine.
Residents are being asked to place items at the curb between Friday evening, Aug. 21, and 7 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22. Organizers stress that everything must be out by 7 a.m. because collection trucks will not backtrack for items placed outside after they have passed a residence.
The city will provide packer trucks and a tire truck to collect debris. Two dumpsters will also be located north of Saint Mark UMC.
Organizers are asking neighbors to help elderly residents and people with disabilities who may have difficulty moving items to the curb. Residents who are able are also encouraged to help load trucks when they reach their block and to clean up vacant lots and their portion of neighborhood alleys.
What Residents Need to Know
Trash, tires and tree debris must be separated. Household trash should be bagged and tied before being placed at the curb.
Tires will not be collected curbside. They must be taken to the location where the tire truck is parked.
Tree and yard debris cannot simply be piled at the curb. Limbs and other plant material must be bagged or tied into bundles. Large tree limbs and stumps will not be accepted. Residents should keep branches to manageable sizes, generally no longer than 4 feet and no more than about 3½ inches in diameter.
Regular household trash carts will not be emptied as part of the clean-up. Residents should continue using their regular trash service for those carts.
No Hazardous Waste
Hazardous materials will not be accepted during the neighborhood clean-up. That includes items such as wet paint, weed killers, fertilizers and other household hazardous chemicals.
Those materials should be taken directly to Wichita’s household hazardous waste facility at 801 Stillwell. Organizers cannot transport hazardous waste for residents.
The free clean-up is specifically for residents within the designated neighborhood boundaries — 13th Street on the south, 17th Street on the north, Grove on the west and Hillside on the east.
Organizers say this is the neighborhood’s opportunity this year to dispose of eligible items at no cost and are encouraging residents to take advantage of it while also helping neighbors who may need an extra hand.
