Wichita attorney and business owner Katy Tyndell overwhelmingly won the Democratic nomination for Kansas’ 4th Congressional District on Tuesday, defeating fellow Democrat Chris Carmichael after campaigning on a message of community engagement and independent leadership. Tyndell told supporters voters were looking for a representative who would “show up, listen and deliver,” saying her campaign connected with residents across the district who are ready for a different approach.
In November, she’ll face six-term Republican U.S. Rep. Ron Estes, who easily secured renomination and is seeking another term representing south-central Kansas.
The general election is expected to highlight two distinctly different styles of representation. Throughout her campaign, Tyndell argued the district deserves a member of Congress who is regularly present in the community, listens to constituents and advocates more aggressively for south-central Kansas. Critics of Estes have long questioned his public visibility, with Democratic opponents frequently reviving the refrain, “Where’s Ron?” Estes, meanwhile, points to his work on the influential House Ways and Means Committee, his advocacy for Wichita’s aviation industry and his constituent services as evidence that he is delivering results for the district.
Along with Estes and Tyndell, Libertarian candidate Drew Cranmer will also appear on the November ballot.
