One of the things that stood out about this year’s Wichita Juneteenth ICT celebration was that there was truly something for everyone.
The weeklong celebration included the Miss Juneteenth pageant, community events throughout the week, the Juneteenth ICT Parade, and three nights of concerts in McAdams Park. We didn’t make it to every event, but we did stop by one that immediately caught our attention: Brunch, Bingo and Boogie at The Center.
Partly because there was free food. And partly because, let’s be honest, a lot of us at The Community Voice qualify for the senior discount these days.
The event, co-sponsored by AARP Kansas, brought together older adults for a morning and afternoon of fellowship, fun and movement. Guests enjoyed brunch before hitting the dance floor for the “boogie” portion of the program.
Getting people up and moving has long been a part of AARP’s healthy aging message, and the dance session showed that exercise doesn’t have to feel like work. Participants filled the floor, enjoying the music, conversation and chance to stay active.

The afternoon wrapped up with bingo, where friendly competition and plenty of laughter kept the energy going. Judging by the smiles around the room, no one seemed in a hurry to leave.
Events like Brunch, Bingo and Boogie helped make Wichita’s Juneteenth celebration more than a weekend festival. It became a week of activities that welcomed residents of all ages.
