President Donald Trump this week unveiled TrumpRx, a new government-hosted website the administration says will help Americans access discounted prescription drugs.
“You’re going to save a fortune,” Trump said at the launch event. “And this is also so good for overall health care.”
But TrumpRx is not an online pharmacy — and it’s not insurance. Here’s what it is, how it works and who might actually benefit.
What Is TrumpRx?
TrumpRx is a federal website that directs consumers to pharmaceutical companies’ direct-to-consumer platforms or provides coupons that can be used at participating pharmacies.
Users cannot purchase medications directly from the government site. Instead, the platform acts as a referral tool, sending patients to drugmakers’ websites where they can pay cash prices or access discount offers.
The White House says the program was made possible through agreements with major pharmaceutical companies, including AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, EMD Serono, Novo Nordisk and Pfizer.
How Does It Work?
Patients can search for a specific medication on the TrumpRx website. If the drug is listed, the site provides pricing information and instructions on how to obtain the discounted rate.
The discounts apply only to people paying without insurance. In fact, the site includes a disclaimer advising consumers to check their insurance co-pay first, since coverage may offer a lower out-of-pocket cost.
That limitation is significant: About 84% of Americans already have prescription drug coverage through employer plans, Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance.
What Drugs Are Included?
TrumpRx launched with just over 40 medications. Many are high-cost brand-name drugs used to treat:
- Obesity
- Diabetes
- Fertility issues
- Asthma
- Heart disease
Included medications feature well-known weight-loss and diabetes drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, along with fertility treatments such as Cetrotide and Gonal-F.
Administration officials say more drugs will be added in the coming months.
How Big Are The Discounts?
The administration touts savings ranging from 50% to more than 90% on certain medications. For example, fertility drug Cetrotide is listed with savings of up to 93%, while other medications offer roughly half off retail prices.
Still, it’s unclear how broadly those savings will help families. The site does not include generic medications, which are often far less expensive than brand-name drugs. And competing services such as GoodRx already offer coupon-based discounts at pharmacies nationwide.
CNN’s Tami Luhby noted that weight-loss drugs may be where consumers see the biggest benefit, since many insurers do not cover medications like Wegovy or Zepbound for weight loss. In those cases, a cash-pay discount could lower the cost for some patients.
Political Context And Delays
TrumpRx is part of a broader push by the administration to show progress on affordability, a major concern for voters amid high costs for housing, groceries and health care.
Trump has repeatedly said he pressured pharmaceutical companies to match lower drug prices charged in other developed countries, arguing that Americans have long subsidized global pricing.
“We’re tired of subsidizing the world,” he said at the White House event.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, who leads the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, promoted the program enthusiastically. He suggested lower prices for Ozempic and Wegovy could lead to Americans collectively losing 100 million pounds. He also said cheaper fertility treatments could spur pregnancies nationwide.
“We’re going to have a lot of Trump babies with these costs,” Oz said, in relation to the decrease in the price of the fertility drug.
The website’s launch followed multiple delays. Officials had previously indicated it would debut before the end of last year, then again in January, before finally going live this week. The administration has not publicly explained the postponements.
Separately, the administration has also negotiated lower prices for certain prescription drugs for Medicare enrollees through a direct negotiation program created under a 2022 law.
The Bottom Line
TrumpRx may offer meaningful savings for uninsured or underinsured Americans paying cash for certain brand-name medications — particularly weight-loss and fertility drugs.
But for the majority of Americans with prescription coverage, insurance may still provide better prices.
As with most health care decisions, experts say patients should compare options carefully before making a switch.
