New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, whose record-setting Senate speech this year denouncing the Trump administration fueled talk of a potential future national campaign, has announced his engagement to girlfriend Alexis Lewis.

Booker, a former Democratic presidential candidate, shared the news on Instagram Sept. 2, posting five photos of the couple — leis around their necks, wide smiles, and a beachside pose — marking the moment. Booker, 56, has never been married.

“I am savoring the soul-affirming wonder of everyday life with my partner, best friend and now my fiancée,” Booker wrote. “We are excited for this journey ahead, having so much fun and feeling deeply grateful for the love, support and energy so many of you have shared with us.”

The pair were introduced on a blind date in 2024 and began seeing each other soon after. By mid-2025, Booker confirmed that they were living together in Washington, D.C., a step he said had enriched their relationship.

Lewis brings her own distinguished pedigree. A Washington, D.C. native, she attended Sidwell Friends School, the Quaker-founded private academy long known as a home for Washington’s elite. The school’s alumni include the children of presidents — Sasha and Malia Obama, Chelsea Clinton, and Tricia and Julie Nixon — underscoring its reputation as one of the nation’s most prestigious prep schools. Lewis went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in marketing from NYU and an MBA in hospitality and real estate development from Cornell. She has built a career in real estate investment, most recently serving as Senior Vice President of Investments at Brasa Capital Management.

Booker’s personal life has occasionally drawn headlines, notably his past relationship with actress Rosario Dawson.

Booker was first elected to the Senate in 2013 in a special election, then reelected in 2014 and 2020. Before that, he served as mayor of Newark, New Jersey’s largest city. His April marathon speech on the Senate floor criticizing President Donald Trump’s agenda lasted more than 25 hours and reignited speculation about his future political ambitions, including a possible 2028 presidential bid.
