In case you didn’t know, since 2021, October 28 has been officially designated as Chucks-N-Pearls Day. According to website Days of the Year, the day is celebrated by participants “wearing Chuck Taylor sneakers and pearl accessories, reflecting the signature style of now presidential-candidate Kamala Harris.
Founded in 2021 LaTanga Raney (we couldn’t find any additional information about her) Chucks-N-Pearls Day recognizes “the first female Vice President of the United States and the highest-ranking black female politician in the country, as well as her illustrious achievements.”
While the pearl necklace is the trademark symbol of Harris’ Howard University sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, the Chuck Taylor sneaker has no hidden mysteries, and many assume Harris simply enjoys wearing them. Her love of Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars was well-established even before then-candidate President Joe Biden tapped her as his running mate in 2020.
“I have a whole collection of Chuck Taylors,” she told The Cut in 2018, while serving in the US Senate.
Harris was often seen on the campaign trail in 2020 wearing Chucks and even wore a black pair on the cover of Vogue in 2021. The casual tennis shoe certainly contributes a relatable casual energy to her ensemble, serving as a laid-back counterpoint to her sharp blazer and pearls.
We’re predicting chucks and pearls as the biggest fashion trend for fall 2024. Dig out your grandmother’s pearls and get ready to rock them, or head to a fashion jewelry store at a mall near you to purchase a string of pearls before they’re all gone.
As for the chucks, in the world of sports shoes, they’re surprisingly affordable. We found low tops for $60 and the high-top version for $65. But we suggest buying now, because recognizing a market trend and growing demand, retailers will do what they’re known to do – jack up the prices.
The relatively short VP – she’s just 5’2” tall –has been favoring the platform variation of the famous Chuck Taylor All Star lately, often stepping out in the sneaker that is raised subtly above the usual Chuck height. The All-Star Lift Platform shoe retails for $70 while the high top version is $75.
Though offered in many colors, Harris has been sticking with black Converse lately, allowing them to blend with apparel in shades like black, blue and white.
