Kansas City’s largest green space is about to get a facelift.

Swope Park, the 1,805-acre urban oasis that has been a cornerstone of the city’s outdoor recreation since 1896, has been awarded $4.25 million in federal funding for extensive renovations.

The Department of the Interior announced the grant on August 7, as part of a $46.7 million investment through the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP) program. Swope Park is one of 10 parks nationwide selected for this round of funding.

The project will focus on revitalizing approximately 215 acres in the northwest section of the park. Planned improvements include:

  • Construction of a 10,000-square-foot destination playground
  • Renovation of five existing shelters
  • Upgrades to the park’s bandstand
  • Creation of a neighborhood connection trail
  • Addition of pedestrian and bicycle safety features along access roads
KC’s largest Park receives $4.25M grant from Dept. of the Interior.

These enhancements aim to modernize facilities while preserving the park’s historic charm. The new playground is expected to be a major draw for families, while the upgraded shelters and bandstand will improve spaces for community gatherings and events.

The ORLP program, funded through the Land and Water Conservation Fund, targets economically underserved communities to create new outdoor recreation spaces and reinvigorate existing parks. This is all part of the Biden-Harris administration’s America the Beautiful initiative, which focuses on improving equitable access to the outdoors.

Swope Park, often called “the people’s playground,” already boasts a wide array of amenities, including the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium, Starlight Theatre, two golf courses, and miles of hiking trails. This new funding is set to enhance the park’s appeal to an even broader range of visitors.

The timeline for the renovations has not yet been announced, but park enthusiasts can look forward to these improvements in the coming years. The upgrades promise to breathe new life into one of Kansas City’s most beloved outdoor spaces, and hopes to ensure that Swope Park continues to serve as a vital recreational resource for generations to come.
