  • Live performances and free programs aim to encourage lifelong love of reading.

The Wichita Public Library is once again hosting a summer reading program to encourage school-aged children to keep reading throughout the summer break and to avoid the “skill slide” that too often results from not reading for weeks.

Pre-registration for the program begins online on May 6, with the first day of Summer Reading on May 23. This year’s program runs through Aug. 1. It will follow the theme “Adventure Begins at Your Library” and offers participants a chance to win prizes including a free book to take home, coupons for activities and entertainment, passes to events, and more.

There will be opportunities to start winning prizes beginning June 27.

The reading opportunities will be geared for different age groups.

Pre-readers” (birth to preschool) offers a chance for families to include the youngest kids in the fun. Parents can set a goal, pick up a timed reading record with tracking stickers, and read with their little ones. When the goal is reached, they can visit the library from June 27 to Aug.1 and collect special prizes.

“Kids Read” is for Kindergarten to 5th Graders. Kids set their own reading goals, pick up an ‘adventure map’ to track their progress and complete challenges. Once their goal is met, they can visit the library, pick up a prize pack and be entered into a drawing for a grand prize.

“Teens Read” is for 6th to 12th Graders. Teens set their own reading goals and track their progress with a customizable journal. When they meet their goal, they can pick up a prize pack and be entered into the grand prize drawing.

“Our summer programs encourage kids to start coming to the library and helps them discover all the things it has to offer. And all of our programs are free and open to the public,” said Savannah Ball, Education and Engagement Manager for the library.  “We want to make sure they enjoy the experience and will keep reading as adults.”
