The City of Kansas City, with the support of a cross section of community organizations, have scheduled two days of activities to discuss strategies and build on one comprehensive plan that the community can support in an effort to address the pressing issue of gun violence in the community.
The events are designed to bring together a broad ranging group of elected officials, community leaders, law enforcement, neighborhood and grassroots organizations, health professionals, educators, business leaders, violence prevention specialists and academic scholars to help finalize an action plan.
The first event on Fri., March 15 is a symposium designed for individuals from businesses and organizations focused on “creating a safe and thriving community,” will be held from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the Kauffman Foundation Conference Center, 4801 Rockhill Rd, Kansas City, MO.
The second event on Sat., March 16 is a forum designed for community members focused on creating safe and thriving communities, is from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Kauffman Foundation Conference Center. Members of the community are encouraged to participate in the Public Safety Community Forum, which is specifically tailored to address the concerns and perspectives of residents.
Facilitated by the nonprofit KC Common Good, the event is designed to facilitate dialogue among stakeholders from various backgrounds, ensuring a holistic approach to addressing the multifaceted issue of gun violence.
By bringing together individuals and organizations with diverse perspectives and expertise, the symposium aims to identify innovative solutions and promote collaboration toward creating a safer community.
The symposium and forum will feature speeches, panel discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities. Topics of discussion will include but are not limited to:
- Community policing strategies
- Mental health intervention and support services
- Youth engagement and prevention programs
- Gun violence prevention measures
- Intersectional approaches to addressing systemic inequalities
- Building trust and cooperation between law enforcement and communities
