The Black Repertory Theatre of Kansas City is presenting “Hi-Hat Hattie,” a one-woman play with music that delves into the extraordinary life of Hattie McDaniel, the trailblazing actress, singer-songwriter, and comedian.
McDaniel made history as the first African American to win an Academy Award for her iconic role as Mammy in the film “Gone with the Wind.”
The play follows McDaniel’s journey, celebrating her achievements and highlighting the challenges she faced as a Black entertainer in Hollywood during a time of racial segregation.
