The Voice Endorses: Melody McCray Miller

We don’t typically endorse candidates in races, but with the future of our children at stake, we couldn’t remain silent in this at-large race for the Wichita Public School Board.

Since Beatty Arnold lost her election to the board in 2018, there hasn’t been an African American on the Wichita School Board.

However, with Alicia Thompson as the superintendent, we knew our students’ best interests were being looked after.

Now, with the retirement of Thompson, it’s imperative that we have someone on the board we can depend on to keep the interest of OUR children at the forefront.

In the 2021 election, we got caught sleeping.

Across the country, and in Wichita, conservatives were awake and plotting to take over school boards so that they could implement their “anti-woke” agenda. In what are supposed to be non-partisan races, Republicans pulled together a ticket of four candidates with a goal of changing the power balance of the Wichita School Board.

If they had won all four seats, they would have taken philosophical control over the seven-member board and would have been able to freely push their agenda forward. They fell short by just one seat, with only three of their four candidates winning their race.

But we’re not safe. The at-large school board seat being contested in the primary election is being vacated by Sheril Logan, who is retiring. Logan is one of the four more moderate members of the board. If her seat is won by a conservative, they’ll have control of the board and control over our children’s destiny.

WE CAN’T AFFORD TO SIT THIS ELECTION OUT – NOT IN THE PRIMARIES OR IN THE GENERAL ELECTION. BELIEVE ME, THEY WON’T STAY AT HOME, AND WE CAN’T EITHER.

VOTE LIKE YOUR CHILDREN’S FUTURE DEPENDS ON IT, BECAUSE IT DOES!! TELL OTHERS WHAT’S AT STAKE AND TELL THEM TO VOTE FOR MELODY McCRAY-MILLER.

We know Melody. She’s done a great job representing our interests as a member of the Sedgwick County Commission and in the Kansas Legislature.

With her Miller’s Beans Company and a position teaching at Wichita State University, she doesn’t need this non-paying position. She WANTS this non-paying position. A former USD 259 instructor, she knows what’s at stake and she WANTS to make a difference.

We are blessed that she stepped up to run. Let’s show her how much we appreciate the time, commitment and attention she’ll be giving to protect the interests of our children when she’s elected by taking the time out of our day to show up at the polls, to vote her in, and to vote for our children’s future.
