The KC Reparations Coalition has announced an upcoming informational meeting scheduled for Mon., June 26, at 6 p.m. The meeting aims to provide attendees with updates on the Coalition’s ongoing efforts and the Mayor’s Commission on Reparations.
Formed in November 2020, the Coalition consists of several local activist and civil rights organizations. Throughout its existence, the Coalition has been actively engaged in community outreach, shedding light on the national reparations movement and playing a pivotal role in establishing the Mayor’s Commission on Reparations.
KC Reparations Coalition members have been at the forefront of the fight for reparatory justice through extensive involvement in presentations, panel discussions, media interviews, and community meetings. Janay Reliford, chair of the coalition, says they are now looking to expand their reach.
“Our goal now is to expand the breadth of the Coalition. We want to bring in all people in the metropolitan area who support Black reparations. Our fight for reparatory justice is a tough one, and we need everyone who supports us on board,” says Janay Reliford, chair of the Coalition.
During the virtual meeting, Coalition members will delve into the organization’s history, providing insights into its work and achievements. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the national movement for reparations, including its historical context and recent developments. Terri Barnes, chair of the Mayor’s Commission, will also be present to discuss the Commission’s role and inform attendees on how they can contribute to its mission.
Crucially, the meeting aims to encourage active participation from attendees by inviting them to share their ideas on what reparatory justice would look like specifically for Kansas City. The Coalition values the input and perspectives of the public in shaping their efforts to ensure that the vision of reparations aligns with the needs and aspirations of the local community.
The virtual meeting is open to the public and hosted on Zoom. To receive a meeting link and obtain further information, contact the KC Reparations Coalition by emailing kcreparationscoalition2023@gmail.com.
