The Wichita Black Nurses, who are continuing their commitment to make vaccinations accessible to the community, have announced their summer COVID vaccination schedule. The released schedule includes Saturday vaccination clinics through September, but additional weekday and special event vaccinations may be added at a later date.

While the number of people who have had the bivalent booster shot remains low across the United States. This booster introduced in fall 2022 targets two COVID strains: Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 and the original SARS-CoV-2 virus.

As of April 2023, 270 Million Americans have had 1 or more COVID vaccination shots, but only 55 million have had the bivalent Booster shot.

Nurse Practitioner Maggie Thompson, with the Wichita Black nurses, says the organization is seeing particularly low participation among members of the Black and Brown community.

This spring, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has amended the use authorizations of the bivalent vaccines to simplify the vaccination schedule for most individuals.

Most individuals, depending on age, previously vaccinated with a monovalent COVID-19 vaccine who have not yet received a dose of a bivalent vaccine may receive a single dose of a bivalent vaccine.

Most individuals who have already received a single dose of the bivalent vaccine are not currently eligible for another dose. The FDA intends to make decisions about future vaccination after receiving recommendations on the fall strain composition at an FDA advisory committee in June.

Individuals 65 years of age and older who have received a single dose of a bivalent vaccine may receive one additional dose at least four months following their initial bivalent dose.

Most individuals with certain kinds of immunocompromise who have received a bivalent COVID-19 vaccine may receive a single additional dose of a bivalent COVID-19 vaccine at least two months following a dose of a bivalent COVID-19 vaccine, and additional doses may be administered at the discretion of, and at intervals determined by, their healthcare provider

Most unvaccinated individuals may receive a single dose of a bivalent vaccine, rather than multiple doses of the original monovalent mRNA vaccines.
