Members of the McAdamsTennis Club, through their affiliation with the National Junior Tennis and Learning Program are offering free tennis lessons through July at the tennis courts at McAdams Park. The lessons are for both youth and adults and for players at all levels, even beginners.

Evening sessions are Tuesdays and Thursdays, with sessions for children ages 5 to 14  from 6 to 7 p.m. and sessions for adults, ages 15 and above, from 7 to 8 p.m.

Summer sessions run May 30 to July 27. There is one remaining class in the spring session, on Tue., May 23, for those who can’t wait to get started.

The group is also continuing a five-decade tradition with their daytime Charles Goose Doughty Jr. Tennis Camp. The one-week camps run May 29-June 2  and June 5-9 from 9 a.m. to noon at the McAdams Courts.

The camps, like the McAdams Tennis Courts, are named after Doughty, a historic figure in Black tennis who for decades ran a free summer tennis camp and taught hundreds of kids the joy of tennis.

After the summer tennis program, players are encouraged to continue working on their game.  McAdams Tennis Club members are regulars on the park’s courts and others are encouraged to drop in for pick-up play.

The finale of the McAdams Tennis season is their annual Wichita MTC Open Tennis Tournament, which will be held July 29-30 at Riverside Tennis Center.

The tournament is open for entry-level players and also includes an “open” level competition for the most advanced players. To register or learn more about the tournament and the organization’s programming, visit McAdamsTennis.com.
