Kristen Kobes Du Mez, author of “Jesus and John Wayne” will be guest lecturer for the Plymouth Church signature event “Word & Note" this weekend.

Plymouth Church is hosting its signature weekend event, “Word & Note”, now in its 14th season, on Friday, Feb. 24 and Saturday Feb. 25. There will be three lectures, one vocal concert, and a reception each evening to meet the guest speaker, musicians, and fellow attendees.

Kristin Kobes Du Mez is a New York Times bestselling author and Professor of History and Gender Studies at Calvin University. She holds a PhD from the University of Notre Dame and her research focuses on the intersection of gender, religion, and politics. 

Dr. Du Mez has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, NBC News, Religion News Service, and Christianity Today, and has been interviewed on NPR, CBS, and the BBC, among other outlets. Her most recent book is Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation.

Vocal Trio from Kansas City – Kristen Altoro-Nevins, Matthew Harris, and Jazlyn Epps

This will be an eclectic mix of music from classical to R&B. Altoro-Nevins is a music theatre singer and actress, having performed such roles as Mimi Marquez in RENT and Crystal in Little Shop of Horrors; Harris has recently performed as Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte, and Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd, and is also a pianist, organist, conductor and voice teacher; and Epps is an R&B singer, songwriter, and actress.
