The first all-Black Mount Everest expedition team, Full Circle Everest, conquered the highest mountain on Earth on May 12. The team of climbers include Manoah Ainuu, Eddie Taylor, Rosemary Saal, Demond “Dom” Mullins, Thomas Moore, James “KG” Kagami and Evan Green.
“I am deeply honored to report that seven members of the Full Circle Everest team reached the summit on May 12,” team leader Phil Henderson wrote in a statement.
Few Black climbers have made the trip. Before the team, only 10 Black climbers were among the nearly 6,000 summits of Everest completed across approximately 60 years.
But the team hopes to inspire future Black athletes and mountaineers to climb higher.
“We’re all Black people … there is a lack of representation of Black people in mountaineering and in high-altitude mountaineering,” said Henderson in a 2021 interview with NPR.
