Turquoise is also a bona fide beauty queen—she was once crowned Miss Juneteenth, a title commemorating the day slavery was abolished in Texas. Life didn’t turn out as beautifully as the title promised, but Turquoise, determined to right her wrongs, is cultivating her daughter, Kai, to become Miss Juneteenth, even if Kai wants something else.

Maintaining a diverse blood supply is a priority of the American Red Cross because it’s important to patients. Some African Americans have rare blood types that are unique for the African American community, and that blood type may be the hope for survival of a patient. You can see more about this from Red Cross here.
