The World’s Most Decorated Paralympian, Curtis Lovejoy
Curtis Lovejoy, affectionately known as “Living Legend” to his fellow athletes, is a Five-Time Paralympian. He is an accomplished competitive swimmer, having represented his country at Paralympic events around the globe. He has become the most accomplished and decorated male athlete in Paralympics history for the U.S.A. Curtis Lovejoy was first introduced to the water as a form of physical therapy following a life-altering car accident in 1986 that left him as an incomplete quadriplegic. In Lovejoy’s case this means he is in a wheelchair and has limited use of his arms. In 2000, Lovejoy beat the odds and became the first athlete to win gold medals in two non-related sports, swimming and fencing. Now, at age 61, he has won over 500 gold medals in swimming, 200 in fencing, has set 12 world records and is ranked the number one fencer in the world. After appearing in many top publications and on television networks, including CBS, Atlanta Journal Constitution, Atlanta Magazine, he still finds the most joy when swimming and is currently training for what will be his sixth Paralympic Games in 2020 being held in Tokyo, Japan.
Curtis Lovejoy’s mission is to inspire people from all walks of life to face down their fears as well as to build awareness and education, rehab, fitness, and career opportunities for those who are faced with Spinal Injury challenges. He serves as a peer supporter for the Shepherd Center’s patients, and he speaks to corporate, school and community groups about overcoming adversity. Lovejoy, who earned a bachelor of science degree in therapeutic recreation from Morris Brown College, now mentors others and coaches the Shepherd Sharks swim team.
