The 92nd Academy Awards nominations were announced on Jan. 13 and Black actors/actresses were almost totally passed over. After recovering from 2015s & 2016s #oscarssowhite, and a year that saw numerous nominations and a win for, both Regina King and Mahershala Ali, it looks like #OscarsSoWhite is once again an appropriate hashtag.
The hashtag helped push the film academy to diversify its membership. Still this year, the only actor of color nominated was Cynthia Erivo, the British actress, for her Harriet Tubman in “Harriet.” (Erivo was also nominated for best song.)
“American Factory,” the first film from Barack and Michelle Obama’s recently launched production company, Higher Ground, was nominated for best documentary. Said Obama: “It’s the kind of story we don’t see often enough and it’s exactly what Michelle and I hope to achieve with Higher Ground.”
The Oscars airs on Feb. 9 on ABC. BY AMPAS
