Valerie B. Jarrett, Senior Adviser to President Barack Obama, will be the keynote speaker at the 8th Annual Sisterhood of Queens Event on Sat., April 16, at the Holiday Inn East, 549 S. Rock Road, from 11:30 a.m – 2 p.m.
Jarrett, who has been a member of the president’s inner circle since he took office, oversees the White House Offices of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs. She also chairs the White House Council on Women and Girls.
Her support of women’s and girl’s initiatives makes her an excellence speaker for the Sisterhood of the Queens, an annual event designed to build positive self-esteem in teen girls by awarding deserving high school seniors with educational scholarships. The event also honors women in the community for their commitment and devotion to empowering others.
The Sisterhood of the Queens event is a fundraiser for CLASS – Caring Ladies Assisting Students to Succeed – a program for girls operating in three Wichita High Schools. This year, more than 60 girls participated in the program that helps educate, motivate and encourage the participants to graduate from high school and choose healthy lifestyle behaviors. CLASS participants play a major role in the Queens event, often providing testimonial and modeling new spring fashions.
Jarrett will be introduced by Kianna Knolland, the 2013-14 National Youth of the Year for the Boys and Girls Club of America.
Tickets for the event are $40 per person and can be purchased online at Eventbrite or by calling Rise Up for Youth at (316) 440-9255.
