Donna Edwards isn’t the only African-American woman running for a seat in the U.S Senate. Also vying for senate seats are: Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill) and California Attorney General Kamala Harris.

Duckworth has spent her career- including her last two terms in congress- advocating for veteran’s rights. An Iraq War veteran, Duckworth has also advocated for women’s rights and gun control. With her election to congress, Duckworth became the House’s first female double amputee, its first Asian American Congressperson from Illinois and its first Thai member. Among Duckworth’s opponents is Andrea Zopp, an African American female and the former CEO of the Chicago Urban League.

In California, Harris is the lead to replace retiring senator Barbara Boxer.
