Insurers Often Shortchange Mental Health Care Coverage, Despite a Federal Law

The Biden administration is pushing insurers and state regulators to improve mental health care coverage, with the federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requiring benefits to be equal with coverage for other health conditions, but many insurers continue to charge higher copayments, limit the frequency of mental health treatment, or impose more restrictive prior authorization policies.
