Balancing public safety and human rights: the debate over Kansas’ bail system

The fairness of bail practices in Kansas criminal cases has been called into question after a Black juvenile defendant was given a bond four times higher than that of a young white man. Makyh Townes, 16, faces second-degree murder charges and remains in adult detention after his bond was set at $2 million. In contrast, Daryon Boone, 19, who is white and charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a 69-year-old woman, was released on a $500,000 bond. The case has reignited debates about balancing public safety with human rights and the often-devastating consequences of locking someone up for months before they are found guilty.
