Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 8, and here are the top health stories as you begin your day.
This week we tackle issues that affect the Black community the most, including access to mental health services, chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure, finding a culturally competent provider, and acceptance of LGBTQ+ youth. Let’s dive in.
Mental health stigma in Black community: Breaking down barriers to treatment

Mental health issues affect people of all races, but African Americans are less likely to seek help than their White counterparts. This disparity can be traced back to the era of slavery when mental health issues were dismissed in the Black community. Today, the stigma surrounding mental health issues in the Black community persists, perpetuating the false notion that psychiatric disorders stem from personal weakness.
Closing the health gap: Addressing disparities in Black health

Health disparities continue to exist for Black Americans in the United States. This article highlights some of the conditions that disproportionately affect Black people, including heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. The reasons behind these disparities are complex, but genetics, socioeconomic factors, and lifestyle choices all play a role. The article provides actionable steps that Black people can take to help close the health gap for these conditions.
Overcoming the scarcity of Black mental health providers: A guide to finding culturally competent care

Finding a therapist that you connect with can be difficult, but it can be even harder to find a Black mental health provider. Only 4.7% of psychologists and 4% of therapists in the U.S. are Black. Many within the Black community prefer a Black mental health professional due to their cultural connection and understanding. This article provides tips on how to find the right therapist and highlights resources like the Color Collective Kansas City and a listing of nearly 35 Black mental health providers in Wichita.
Reports reveal alarming suicide rates and transphobia among Black LGBTQ+ youth

Two recent reports from LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations shed light on the challenges faced by Black queer youth, including high rates of suicide attempts, feelings of unsafety at school, and encounters with transphobia and homophobia. The reports also offer insights into how to support these youth, including the importance of community and familial support. While many Black queer youth express pride in their identities, they still face intersecting discrimination and a lack of supportive adults in their lives. Advocates are calling for the creation of safe spaces that embrace Black queer youth fully and for LGBTQ+ organizations to address barriers around race that make it difficult for kids of color to use their services.
