The Community Voice is always interested in connecting with strong freelance writers and reporters who can help us tell relevant, well-reported stories in Wichita, the Kansas City metro and communities across Kansas.

We are especially interested in writers who understand the communities they cover, can identify stories that matter and can bring a strong community perspective to their reporting.

Assignments may include local news, business, health, education, arts and culture, sports, government, community issues, profiles and other topics of interest to our audiences.

What We’re Looking For

We want writers who can report, not just write.

That means being able to:

  • Conduct strong interviews.
  • Identify the real story behind an assignment.
  • Ask follow-up questions when information is unclear or incomplete.
  • Verify facts and information.
  • Recognize when something is missing.
  • Turn in accurate, engaging copy that requires minimal editing.
  • Meet agreed-upon deadlines.

Freelancers should be comfortable working independently while following The Community Voice’s editorial standards and direction.

How Freelance Assignments Work

Freelance writers work with The Community Voice on an assignment-by-assignment basis.

Assignments and frequency will vary depending on our coverage needs, the writer’s interests and availability, and the communities or topics they are able to cover.

Freelance work does not guarantee a set number of assignments or hours.

Compensation is determined by the scope of the assignment and will be agreed upon before work begins.

We also welcome story pitches from freelance writers when they identify strong ideas that fit The Community Voice’s audiences and coverage priorities.
