The Community Voice | Wichita, Kansas
Approximately 8–10 hours per week

The Community Voice is looking for an energetic, curious and community-connected person to help us expand our digital coverage of Wichita.

This is not a traditional newspaper reporter position. We’re looking for someone who likes being out in the community, notices what people are talking about and is comfortable capturing stories through photos, short videos, interviews and social media.

The right person will help The Community Voice find and share more of what is happening in Wichita — particularly events, people, trends and stories that appeal to younger audiences and often don’t receive much attention from traditional media.

What You’ll Do

  • Attend selected community events and activities and capture photos and short vertical video.
  • Produce quick social-first content from events, businesses, programs and people around Wichita.
  • Conduct short on-camera interviews and “one-question” conversations.
  • Identify interesting people, events and potential story ideas for The Community Voice.
  • Help us spot trends, entertainment, culture, sports and community stories that may appeal to younger readers.
  • Gather basic information, names and contact information for stories that may need additional reporting.
  • Find events and activities that should be included on The Community Voice community calendar.
  • Occasionally create short written posts, event recaps or news briefs with editorial and AI support.
  • Work with our digital team to make sure photos and video are uploaded quickly enough to remain timely.
  • Help develop recurring social features such as community voices, event recaps, quick interviews and other short-form content.
  • Represent The Community Voice professionally while attending events and interacting with the public.

What We’re Looking For

You do not have to be an experienced journalist.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is naturally curious and enjoys talking with people.
  • Knows what is happening — or wants to know what is happening — around Wichita.
  • Is comfortable approaching people and asking questions.
  • Can take good photos and vertical video with a smartphone.
  • Understands Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Reels and short-form digital content.
  • Has good judgment about what is interesting, useful or worth sharing.
  • Is dependable and can meet deadlines.
  • Communicates clearly and can accurately collect names, facts and contact information.
  • Is comfortable learning new technology and using AI tools as part of the content-production process.
  • Can work independently while following The Community Voice’s editorial standards and direction.

Experience with Canva, CapCut or other basic photo/video tools is helpful but not required.

What This Position Is — and Isn’t

This position is primarily about finding and capturing content, not producing heavily edited video or writing long newspaper articles.

Some assignments may become full stories. Others may simply become a 60-second video, a photo gallery, a short social post or a quick interview.

Our goal is to produce more timely, engaging community content without turning every good idea into a long article.

Professional video production and more complex editing will be handled separately when needed.

Typical Weekly Deliverables

Depending on assignments and what is happening in the community, a typical week might include:

  • Coverage of 1–2 community events, activities or people.
  • 2–3 usable photo/video content packages.
  • At least one short interview or social-first feature.
  • Several potential story or content leads.
  • New event listings or calendar leads.
  • Timely upload of all photos, video, names and information gathered.

This is a flexible part-time position expected to average approximately 8–10 hours per week, including some evening and weekend assignments.
