For most of our lives, taking care of our digestive system meant pretty simple things: eat your vegetables, get enough fiber and try to stay regular.

Nobody was telling us to worry about our “microbiome.”

Now the word seems to be everywhere — on yogurt containers, probiotic supplements and health stories promising that a healthier gut can improve everything from digestion to immunity.

So what changed?

It turns out we’ve always had a microbiome. Scientists have simply gotten much better at understanding what it does.

There Are Workers Living In Your Gut

The gut microbiome is the enormous community of bacteria and other microorganisms living primarily in your large intestine.

For years, we thought of bacteria mostly as germs. Scientists knew beneficial bacteria existed, too, but they couldn’t easily identify and study most of the microbes living inside us.

Advances in DNA sequencing changed that. Researchers began discovering that those organisms aren’t just passengers.

They’re working.

Consider what happens when you eat black-eyed peas or collard greens.

Your digestive system breaks the food down and absorbs what it can. But humans can’t completely digest some types of fiber.

That fiber continues into the large intestine, where certain gut bacteria take over.

They ferment the fiber and produce substances called short-chain fatty acids.

And here’s the important part:

Your body uses what those bacteria make.

One of those substances, butyrate, helps fuel the cells lining your colon. Others interact with the immune system, metabolism and inflammation.

In simple terms:

You feed your gut bacteria. They turn part of that food into substances that help you.

Gut microbes also help produce some vitamins, compete with harmful organisms and communicate with the immune system.

That is why scientists have become so interested in them.

Why Didn’t We Know This Before?

We knew bacteria lived inside us. What scientists couldn’t easily do was identify most of them.

New genetic technology allowed researchers to study microbes by their DNA instead of having to grow them in a laboratory.

That opened up an entire ecosystem scientists had largely been unable to see.

Since then, researchers have found connections between the gut microbiome and digestion, metabolism, immune function and diseases including diabetes, obesity and inflammatory bowel disease.

But scientists are still learning.

A different microbiome may be associated with a disease without necessarily causing it. And researchers still can’t point to one exact combination of bacteria and say, “This is the perfect healthy microbiome.”

So gut health matters. But that doesn’t mean we need to obsess over it.

You May Already Be Feeding Your Microbiome

One of the clearest lessons from microbiome research is surprisingly familiar:

Eat more fiber and a variety of plant foods.

That includes foods that have been on Black Southern tables for generations — greens, black-eyed peas, beans, sweet potatoes, okra, cabbage, fruit and nuts.

Those foods provide fiber that some gut bacteria use as food.

So when grandma told you to eat your vegetables, she wasn’t talking about your microbiome.

But she was feeding it.

That doesn’t mean fried chicken, macaroni and cheese or dessert suddenly have to disappear. One meal isn’t going to make or break your microbiome.

Your overall eating pattern matters more than any single food.

And you don’t necessarily need expensive probiotic supplements or special “gut-health” products to take care of it.

So Why Should I Care Now?

Not because your body suddenly developed a microbiome.

You’ve had one all along.

What’s new is our understanding that our bodies don’t digest food entirely on their own.

Trillions of microbes living inside us help finish the job. They process parts of food we can’t digest ourselves and produce substances our bodies can use.

That’s the big deal about the microbiome.

And it gives us one more reason to follow some very old advice:

Eat your vegetables — and don’t forget the beans.
