Wichita’s weeklong Juneteenth celebration came to a joyful close Sunday evening with Gospel Night, featuring a Gospel Concert Finale headlined by Maurette Brown Clark and performances by local church choirs.
The beautiful weather and uplifting music created the perfect setting for the final gathering of seven days of Juneteenth activities. The choirs brought the powerful, full sound that only a community gospel celebration can deliver, while Brown Clark’s performance provided a fitting finale.
But the evening was about more than music.
One sign of a great event is when people don’t want to leave. Even after the concert ended, many stayed behind, greeting friends, sharing hugs and catching up with people they hadn’t seen in a while—or had just seen the day before and were happy to see again.
Some walked through the crowd visiting. Others remained in their chairs, smiling and taking in the moment.
It was a simple but powerful reminder of what Juneteenth is all about: community. Long after the final song was sung, the spirit of fellowship remained, bringing Wichita’s Juneteenth celebration to a memorable close.
