Georgio’s BBQ has a new home in a familiar location.

The popular carryout barbecue trailer is gone from the parking lot at 13th and Hydraulic.  Now, they have a storefront location, at 2251 East 21st Street, near the north end of the strip retail plaza just west of 21st and Grove.

Owner and BBQ guru Steven Moore said it feels good to be in a storefront, especially this location that holds special memories. Years ago, his father, George Moore operated a full-service at the same site.  That was decades ago and since then, the original strip center on the site, was torn down and replaced.

“People who remember the 80s and 90s would remember Georgio’s in this same location,” he said. “It was a big place, seating about 60 or more people. At one time, Barry Sanders’ Heisman Trophy was on display in the middle of the room.”

Moore stuck with the old name when he opened his barbecue venture about eight years ago after a lifetime of assorted jobs in sales.

BBQ With a Soul Food Twist

The most popular items on the menu are brisket and ribs, but the hot links and chicken are big sellers.  His Soul Food Sunday menu brings a packed house at the counter and a line around the corner outside waiting to get in.

“I call my food BBQ with a soul food twist,” he said. “We have collard greens, black-eyed peas, pinto beans, baked beans, candied yams, corn on the cob, corn bread, beef short ribs, fried chicken and baked chicken on the menu.”

Right now, the operation is strictly takeout with the food being cooked on big smokers in the parking lot behind the building.

Moore said he plans to add some tables outside on the patio where people can sit and eat.

A Family Operation

Georgio’s BBQ is a family enterprise. On a given day you’ll find grandkids Keviyon Johnson, Jayda Scott, Aniyah Robinson, and Ke’Andre Anderson on duty taking orders, slicing and weighing meat, cooking sides, packaging food and manning the cash register.

“We’re a full family business,” Moore says. “My daughter. Porche Moore works here and so does my kids’ mother (Jodee Bradley who also owns Jodee B’s Catering) We’re best friends.”

Georgio’s is open from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday and from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
