Elisabeth’s Lounge is bringing R&B, African food, and culture to East Wichita.  Located at 6160 E. 21st St. N., Elisabeth’s Lounge opened its doors in April 2025, quickly becoming more than just another nightlife venue.

“It’s a place where people can come together and experience diverse culture and community in a safe environment,” said Kouassi Bernard Kesse

The Vision

Known around Wichita simply as Kesse, he’s the visionary behind this new eastside offering.  Originally from Côte d’Ivoire, Kesse arrived in Wichita in 2013 and has been in and out of the city over the past decade. The name of the lounge carries deep meaning—it’s a tribute to his mother, Elisabeth.

“She is my strength in everything I do,” Kesse shared. “Naming the lounge after her was personal. Everything here started with her spirit.”

A Vibe

When asked what makes Elisabeth’s Lounge different, Kesse is clear, it’s a combination of diverse culture and all-night hospitality that sets the venue apart. In a city where nightlife options often cater to the same crowds and formats, Elisabeth’s stands out by honoring the multicultural richness of its guests.

“We also bring a wide variety of music—DJs, live bands, art, comedy, and more. Every month, people can experience Afrobeats, Reggae, R&B, and more.”

So far this isn’t a college or 20 something hang out.  Instead, true to his goal, the vibe is relaxed and multicultural.

Kesse also sees the space as a place to build relationships and networks, especially among Black professionals and creatives.

Kesse said there wasn’t anything like this on the east side of town.

“I wanted to create a space where the community didn’t have to travel downtown to enjoy themselves. This is for us, he concluded with a welcoming gesture.

The Look

Located in the strip center just west of Woodlawn and 21st street.  From the outside, Elizabeth’s Lounge looks like just another spot, but step inside and you’re met with a stunning surprise — a sleek, modern space filled with leather couches, big-screen TVs, a spacious contemporary bar, and walls of multi-color flowers.

Don’t think this is just a sit-down place, Elisabeth’s sports and oversized dance floor, state of the art DJ equipment and a stage for live performances.

The Flavor

More than just a lounge, Elisabeth’s is a great restaurant, offering a mix of juicy lamb chops alongside authentic African suya and jollof rice.

The American menu features lite options like chicken wings and strips and tacos.  Full dinner fare includes several steak options and fried lobster.

The African menu is truly authentic.  It  includes suya, either chicken or beef, cooked with the spicy suya peanut seasoning dry rub; samosas, a popular fried pastry filled with; spiced meat, tilapia, well seasoned with onions and peppers; and goat meat slow cooked with spices.

That’s just a portion of the African menu, that also includes popular sides including jolof rice, fufu, ugali, couscous and plantains.

Kesse plans to keep the kitchen open late for those looking for a late night meal. While delicious, African dishes must be pre-ordered at least one hour before pickup or dine in.

Looking Ahead

With strong momentum from its early months, Kesse has a bold vision for what’s next.

“I want to grow the opportunities for entertainment and offer new and exciting events that we don’t typically see in this community,” he said.

He already has a live performance planned with 90s R&B singer Adina Howard set to appear at the lounge on Sun., Aug.24.  Howard, who is best known for her song “Freak Like Me,” will be the midpoint entertainment for a day party that begins at 5 p.m. with Howard on stage at 8 p.m.

The party continues into the early morning.

Upcoming football watch parties have also been set.

The offering could be as diverse as Afro-Caribbean dance nights, fashion shows, or wellness workshops. The facility is also available for birthdays, weddings, celebrations of life, or any event that brings the community together.

Elisabeth’s Lounge is positioning itself as more than just a nightlife venue—it’s becoming a hub for cultural expression, unity, and joy.

“Elisabeth’s Lounge isn’t just another nightspot—it’s a gathering place where Wichita’s future is being shaped through music, flavor, and community.”
