September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month and the Uriel E. Owens Sickle Cell Disease Association of the Midwest (Sickle Cell Midwest) is set to host its 14th annual Strolling for Sickle Cell Fun Walk.
The Fun Walk takes place at Skywall Memorial Park, next to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, MO, Sept. 14, from 8 a.m. to noon. The event aims to raise awareness about sickle cell disease (SCD) and generate support for those affected by this inherited blood disorder.
Sickle cell disease disproportionately affects the Black community. Approximately 100,000 people in the United States are living with SCD, most of whom are of African descent.
The disease causes red blood cells to become sticky, hard, and crescent-shaped instead of soft and round. This abnormality makes it difficult for blood to flow smoothly and carry oxygen to the rest of the body, leading to severe pain, tissue and organ damage, acute anemia, and even strokes.
Community education is a crucial aspect of the event. One in 12 African Americans are born with sickle cell trait, meaning they have the potential to pass the disease to their children. Events like this help disseminate crucial information and provide support for those affected.
The Fun Walk offers more than just exercise. Participants can enjoy a complete pancake breakfast, raffle, line dancing, and various crafts. In addition, information booths will provide resources for patients and families dealing with SCD.
Financial support is a critical aspect of the event. SCD is associated with high treatment costs, with lifetime healthcare expenses for an average patient reaching age 45 estimated to exceed $1 million. Annual out-of-pocket costs can range from $10,000 to more than $30,000.
Sickle Cell Midwest, celebrating over 43 years of community service, operates entirely on volunteer efforts. All funds raised during the event will directly support their mission within Kansas and Missouri.

Events like the Sickle Cell Fun Walk play a crucial role in educating the public and rallying support for those affected by this challenging disease.
