If you’re looking for a job or a career shift into construction, you’re in luck. The construction industry is reaching out to the Kansas City community with an opportunity to explore career paths and connect with industry professionals.
The annual Construction Workforce Industry Day (CWID), scheduled for Friday, August 9, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., promises to be a gateway for those interested in joining one of the fastest-growing industries in the country.
Hosted at the Linwood YMCA, 3800 E. Linwood Blvd., KCMO, the free event is sponsored by JE Dunn Construction and Hot 103 Jamz. The CWID serves as a skilled trades expo, offering attendees direct access to construction and skilled trades professionals.
“This is the opportunity for you… to show up and show out for career opportunities in our community,” says JE Dunn Community Relations Coordinator G.G. Owens. “We look forward to seeing you at our event.”
According to the event organizers, the construction industry is projected to see a 12% increase by 2026, with an expected employment growth of 180,000 people over the next decade to keep up with high demand. This growth highlights the urgent need for skilled workers in the industry.
The event welcomes a diverse range of attendees, including school groups (18+ to work), summer camp groups, church groups, teens and adults, returning citizens, participants in second chance programs, women’s groups, and individuals interested in apprenticeship programs. This inclusive approach aims to address the underrepresentation of minorities, women, and veterans in the construction workforce.
Attendees can expect:
- Opportunities to speak with superintendents and skilled trades representatives
- Information on current employment and apprenticeship opportunities
- Chance to register with industry partners like Builders’ Association, Youth Build, and Show Me Heroes
- Free resources from skilled trades community partners
- Live remote broadcast by KPRS 103.3 radio station
- Giveaways, refreshments, and music
A key point emphasized by organizers is that experience is not always required in the construction industry since on-the-job training is often available. This makes the event particularly valuable for those considering a career change or entering the workforce.
JE Dunn Construction, the main sponsor and an equal opportunity employer, stresses its commitment to diversity in hiring. The company actively seeks candidates from all backgrounds, including those with disabilities and veterans.
The Construction Workforce Industry Day represents an effort to address the skills gap in the construction industry while also providing opportunities for community members.
