With the August primaries just around the corner, community organizations in Wyandotte County are collaborating to sponsor a candidates Meet and Greet on Sat., July 6, noon to 2 p.m. at the Beatrica Lee Community Center, 1310 N. 10th St. KCK.

Primary Only Races

There are important primaries in several races that are actually serving as the general election since a Republican has not filed to run for the seat.  Those races include the Kansas 4th District Senate Race.  Whoever advances from the primary between current Sen. David Haley and his opponent Ephren Taylor III will be the presumed winner since no one filed as a Republican for that seat.

There’s a similar situation in the race for the Kansas 35th District House Race. Marvin Robinson, the Democrat currently holding that seat, has drawn three opponents:  Kimberly DeWitt, Wanda Brownlee Paige and Michelle Watley.  A Republican has not filed to run for that seat.

In the 29th District Court, 8th Seat two Democrats are facing off, without a Republican contender for the November general election.  In this race, Incumbent Jane Sieve Wilson will face off against Allison Williamson.

Other Primaries

On the Democratic side, there are several other Wyandotte County races with primaries, where there is a Republican competitor the winner will face off against in November.

One of the races is Kansas 33rd House District serving Bonner Springs, Edwardsville, Lake Quivira and some of western Kansas City, KS. The current representative is Mike Thompson, a Republican, who is seeking reelection.  Democrats running for the seat are Mathew Reinhold and Eli Woody.

Also facing off in a primary are the candidates for the 2nd Congressional District race.  They are Nancy Boyda and Matt Kleinmann. Boyda served one term representing the 2nd Congressional District in congress from 2006.  She defeated then incumbent Jim Ryun, but lost in her bid for reelection to Kansas Treasurer Lynn Jenkins.

The current 2nd District Congressman Jake LaTurner is not seeking reelection.

Candidates from other races without primaries have also been invited to attend the meet and greet. Races up for election in Kansas this year include all members of the Kansas House and Senate, all congressional seats, a portion of the Kansas Board of Education, district court judges and district attorneys.  Precinct committee women and men are also up for reelection.

The forum is sponsored by the Kansas City, KS Branch NAACP, Unity with a Purpose and others.
