Ke’Aasia Dickens is competing in her first Miss Juneteenth pageant on June 13. She is one of seven young ladies vying for this year’s title. She will be a freshman at Coffeyville Community College in the fall.

The 17-year-old said she entered the competition as a way to make a positive impact and hopefully become a role model for other young women.

“If and when I become Miss Juneteenth ICT, I plan to make opportunities for careers and life goals accessible for young Black teens. I hope to be the voice for them and to …  allow them to know that we are beauty in the flesh and can touch the stars if we put our mind to it and put in the work,” she said.

Dickens’ interests include R&B and soul music such as Jhene Aiko, Lauryn Hill, Betty Wright, and Jagged Edge, skating and fashion.

“I like putting outfits together to take pictures or whipping something up with my sewing machine. I enjoy doing hair. It’s like I’m starting with nothing and in the end I have a masterpiece. I also like to dance, or talk on the phone with my friends,” she said.

She says she wants to be her family’s first college grad and, from there, to build generational wealth.

“I want to own multiple businesses and work in every field I aspire to. I will be successful and, because of that, I’ll spend my life traveling the world and doing what I love personally and professionally,” she said.

The Miss Juneteenth ICT pageant is Thursday, June 13 in the CAC Theater on the WSU campus.
