Deena Holmes, 16, is making her first try at winning the Miss Juneteenth ICT crown.

“If I become Miss Juneteenth I hope to get our youth back to doing positive things such as giving back to the less fortunate,” she said. “I want to get some good summer programs going on so I can be sure that they have something to keep them busy so they won’t even have time to make bad decisions.”

She said keeping the youth of the African-American community out of the system is her primary goal. “I want to get the Black community back to how it’s supposed to be,” she said.

Deena, a student at The Independent School, is the daughter of Dominica Galloway & Alvin Holmes.

The Miss Juneteenth ICT pageant is Thursday night, June 13 at the CAC theater on the WSU campus. Doors open at 6, show starts at 7.
