The cult-favorite Buc-ee’s chain of supersized gas stations and travel centers has taken the first step towards building a new location in Kansas City, KS, near the Kansas Speedway.
Buc-ee’s has filed a “preliminary plat,” which is the first step in developing a plot of land, with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County to rezone a 57-acre property just off I-70 from agricultural to commercial land usage.
The property Buc-ees is looking at is located at the intersection of 110th Street and I-70. That plot is currently owned by the Kansas Speedway and was appraised at $1.9 million this year. If Buc-ee’s preliminary plat is approved, the company would still need to file a final plan and get it approved before construction could begin.
Buc-ee’s is a Texas-based chain known for its immense travel centers featuring over 100 gas pumps, enormous convenience stores, abundant snack options like their popular Beaver Nuggets, and its beloved beaver mascot. The potential KCK location would be Buc-ee’s first in Kansas, following the company’s recent expansion into Missouri with a 53,000 square foot travel center opening in Springfield in December 2023.
The area surrounding the Kansas Speedway has drawn significant interest from developers recently. Plans for a new Mattel-themed amusement park and a Margaritaville Hotel have been announced nearby. Sports teams like the Chiefs and Royals have also explored the area as a potential site for new stadiums.
While Buc-ee’s has been mum regarding the Kansas plans, locals have expressed excitement about the possibility of the brand coming to the Kansas City metro. The travel centers have developed a cult following for their vast array of food and merchandise along with their immaculate restrooms.
However, hurdles still remain before construction can begin. Buc-ees initial proposal will go before the Unified Government’s planning commission on June 10.
