The National Black United Front – Kansas City are sponsoring their annual Buy Black Expo on Sat., Feb.,10, at the Bruce Watkins Center, this time with an outstanding addition.  In addition to the expo that includes a vendor market, food court, voter registration, community resources and live entertainment, the expo will include a special acclaimed guests and a free movie viewing. 

In conjunction with the KC Reparations Coalition, there will be two free showings of the 2023 movie“The Big Payback” a documentary chronicling the journey and work of the City of Evanston, IL to become the first city in the U.S. to adopt and distribute tax-funded reparations for Black Americans.To date, $20 million has been committed to reparations by the City of Evanston.

A special guest at the expo will be Robin Rue Simmons, the founder and executive director of the non-profit FirstRepair.  From 2017 to 2021, Simmons served as the 5th Ward Alderman in Evanston, IL and is identified as the force behind building support for and passage of the City’s reparations policy.  She’s featured prominently in “The Big Payback.”  

The Expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be two showings of the documentary – at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The event is free however the Coalition encourages attendees to register for the two documentary showings to ensure a seat.
