Metropolitan Community College is honored to feature an engaging conversation between Lisa Ginter, CEO of CommunityAmerica Credit Union, and American Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King III. Jan. 13, 7:30 pm: “Steps of a Good Man,” a locally produced play, the Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Dr.  An intergenerational story centered on an elderly man who shares his experiences with the civil rights movement from his front porch. Mon., Jan. 22, 5:30 – 7 pm: 20th Annual Diversity Student Leader Reception, Student Union Wildcat Chamber. The MLK Jr. Diversity Student Leader Reception is an annual event sponsored by the College of Agriculture. Students, faculty and staff learn about the civil rights movement and current diversity issues from those who have fought and overcome cultural challenges. The 2024 reception will feature Mr. Corey Williamson, executive director of the K-State Student Union and leader of the Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Framework Action Team at K-State. 

Tue, Jan. 23, 6 – 8 pm: “Brother Outsider” Film Screening, Multicultural Center Oneok Room.  Screening of the film “Brother Outsider – The Life of Bayard Rustin.” This documentary tells the story of Bayard Rustin, the African-American civil rights activist, notable for his activism for racial equality, gay rights, socialist issues, and organizing the 1963 March on Washington.

Wed, Jan. 24, 2:30 – 5 pm: 10th Annual College of Arts and Sciences Civil Rights Teach-In, Leadership Studies Town Hall. Join the conversation on social justice issues relating to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences.

Thu, Jan. 25, 11:30 am – 1 p.m.: MLK Presidential Lecture, Alumni Center Ballroom. This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Juan Gilbert, Endowed Professor and Chair of the Computer and Information Science and Engineering Department at the University of Florida. $25 Must register to attend. 

Fri., Jan. 26, 11:30 am – 1:00 pm: Affinity Group Lunch & Learn, 204/205 Multicultural Center. The Faculty and Staff Affinity Network invites you to join in their annual MLK Week Lunch. Affinity group members and other K-State faculty and staff are invited to bring their lunch and engage in a discussion about social justice and diversity at K-State.  

Fri., Jan. 26, 1:30 p.m: Laying of the Wreaths and Candlelight Ceremony,  Union Courtyard & Martin Luther King Jr. Bust, The annual Laying of the Wreath and Candle Lighting ceremony marks the end of L-State’s week of programming. The K-State campus and Manhattan community are invited to join in remembering Dr. King’s life through this event. The program will begin with the candlelight ceremony and end at the MLK bust in front of Ahearn Field House.

Thu., Jan. 11, noon: Governor’s Annual MLK Walk and Proclamation Signing, South doors of the Kansas Capitol.  The march will be led by Gov. Laura Kelly, legislators, members of the Kansas African American Affairs Commission, and the Topeka High School Drumline. The march will culminate with Kelly signing the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. proclamation in the first-floor rotunda at noon. The keynote speaker is Dr. Robert E. Weems Jr., the Willard Garvey Distinguished Professor of Business History at Wichita State University.   

Fri., Jan. 12, 1 pm: Will we Overcome? Crown at 70 with Chreyl Brown Henderson. Join Cheryl Brown Henderson in conversation with Dr. Valerie Mendoza as they discuss the legacy of her family and what the Brown v. Board Supreme Court decision means today, 70 years later. Mon., Jan. 15, 5:30 pm: “Whose Dream Is It?” Westside Christian Church, 432 SW. Lindenwood Ave. The Topeka Center for Peace and Justice in partnership with Living the Dream, Inc. is sponsoring its 30th Annual Community MLK Celebration and Chili and Soup Dinner. The Rev. Donna Gilchrist, host pastor. The free dinner starts at 5:30 pm followed by the program at 7 pm. Dr. Venus Lee, CEO of GraceMed Health Clinic is the keynote speaker. Music will be provided by the Faith Temple Praise Team, representation will also be provided by the Jewish, Mennonite, Baha’i and Islamic faith community.
