Effective Jan. 1, 2024, the State of Kansas will reduce the state’s sales tax on groceries.

In May 2022, Gov. Laura Kelly signed the “Axe the Food Tax” legislation that dropped the tax from 6.5% to 4% effective January 2023.

That legislation also called for a 2% drop in the food sales tax on January 1, 2024.  The law calls for a reduction of the sales tax to zero in 2025.

The lowered rate applies to food, food ingredients and certain prepared foods. Shoppers can expect to see two tax rates on their receipts, one for qualifying items and one for other items.

Gov. Kelly said the lower sales tax will save taxpayers about $740 million over the three-year reduction.

An average family spending $200 per week on groceries is expected to save $208 in 2023.
