Jazz in the Garden celebrates the deep roots of jazz and Gospel in Kansas City in an urban community garden.
On Sat., Sept. 2, the second Jazz in the Garden will be held at Global One Urban Farming, offering attendees a unique opportunity to see live local jazz outdoors, have some BBQ, and get a massage, all while supporting a good cause.
The event is a fundraiser for Global One Urban Farming, a nonprofit that has established a large community garden on inner-city soil that sustainably grows organic vegetables and donates them for free to seniors, veterans and the needy.
Jazz in the Garden will have two licensed massage therapists giving chair massages for $2 a minute. A ticket to the event includes barbecue and sides catered by Q39 and performances from local jazz and gospel artists.
“Kansas City is known for barbeque and jazz, and we’ll have both,” says Global One founder and president Anthony Nealy.

The show will feature both jazz and R&B-style gospel. The Dougan Smith Quartet and Adam Larson are both affiliated with UMKC’s music conservatory and will play jazz. Gospel music will be provided by Billy Byrd Sr., I Am David, Brotha Mike, Dr. Stuckey III, and a few surprise guests.
Tickets to Jazz in the Garden include admission to the concert, along with complimentary beverages and a BBQ dinner. Tickets can be purchased from Eventbrite for $20, with all proceeds going towards Global One Urban Farming.
This event is the second of three, with the last Jazz in the Garden event of the year taking place on Oct. 14 as a harvest volunteer appreciation event.
About Global One
Global One distributes 30,000 pounds of produce a year, free of charge, to area seniors, veterans, and low-income families. The group has 1.5 acres of previously unused inner-city land that they have reclaimed to grow tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, green beans, and other herbs and vegetables. Global One also has community garden clubs at area schools like KIPP Academy and the Kaufman School that teach area students how to produce vegetables from seed to harvest.
“We are growing and giving away organic vegetables for free to help raise health levels in the community,” says Nealy.
