sidewalks

Do you know of a sidewalk that needs repair or maintenance in your community? Voice your concerns at one of the upcoming GO KC sidewalk improvement meetings.

Kansas City dedicates $5 million each year to sidewalk repair and maintenance as a part of the $800 million GO KC capital improvement program approved by voters in 2017.

City staff will host four virtual public meetings in March to identify the biggest priorities and focus areas for the program as they work to improve and rebuild sidewalks in all neighborhoods.

All meetings will be held online and will be recorded and posted on the sidewalk program webpage.

The first meeting is March 3, 6 to 7 p.m.

During public meetings, city staff and the project team will provide an update on the GO KC sidewalk program, describe and preview the Comprehensive Sidewalk Plan and gather input from attendees. Representatives will answer questions, listen to concerns and discuss any outstanding issues.

Sidewalk work includes inspections, American with Disabilities Act (ADA) curb ramps, spot repairs, and entire block replacements.

Overall, Kansas City has approximately 4,000 miles of existing sidewalks. Inspections are key to identifying current conditions — which is critical information to inform forthcoming sidewalk repairs.

The city has been making spot repairs based on preexisting 311 requests. Based on the current estimate, repairs based on this list will be complete by 2025. So far, the city has inspected 1,500 miles of sidewalk and 600 miles of sidewalk are scheduled to be inspected each year moving forward.

View the current sidewalk inspection map. After the 311 sidewalk requests are completed, the next step will involve a systematic sidewalk construction repair process. The Comprehensive Sidewalk Plan, in development over the next year will consider equity, community feedback, bicycle/pedestrian counts and activity and other factors and will guide the effort, helping inform and prioritize repair projects.
